‘In the mountain depths…’ by Sarumaru no Taifu
Deer and Japanese Cypress, Ishida Yūtei
Translated by Clay MacCauley
In the mountain depths,
Treading through the crimson leaves,
The wandering stag calls.
When I hear the lonely cry,
Sad–how sad!–the autumn is.
